The Life and Art of Albert Venus

Born in Dresden, Germany, Albert Venus was a painter, draftsperson, genre painter, landscape painter, and etcher. After losing his parents at the age of twelve, he was raised in a Catholic orphanage and attended the Catholic Freischule in his hometown. He later studied at the Dresden Royal Academy of Fine Arts. From 1860 to 1866, he was a student in the studio of the painter Ludwig Richter, becoming one of his favorite pupils. During this period, his style was closely aligned with that of his teacher.

Venus's artistic development was significantly shaped by his travels to Italy in 1866/67 and 1869. During these journeys, he produced various works using oil studies and watercolors. His time in Rome and its surroundings resulted in drawings that utilized ink or watercolor, where his own stylistic characteristics began to emerge. His oil painting, Gewitter in der römischen Campagna (Acqua acetosa), was awarded an academic scholarship in 1868, which facilitated a subsequent trip to Rome with his friend Viktor Paul Mohn.

The works produced by Venus during his Italian travels demonstrate a transition in his artistic language. These oil studies utilized light in a way that incorporated subtle impressionistic effects. His work is noted for its:

Following his return from Italy, Venus married Cäcilie Plaul in 1870. He undertook a final study trip through Northern Bohemia with his teacher Ludwig Richter and Carl Wilhelm Müller.
