The Life and Vision of Batuz
Batuz is an artist, philosopher, and cultural activist. Born in 1933, his early life was marked by significant movement; following the approach of World War II front lines to his family estate in Hungary, he moved to Austria before his family emigrated to Argentina in 1949. An entirely self-taught artist, Batuz developed a style that transitioned from naturalistic and figurative painting toward abstraction. His work often explores the "Interrelation of Forms," utilizing a line that acts as a mental barrier with a vital function within the picture.
His artistic practice involves various media, including large-scale paintings, collages using pasted paper and canvas on wood, and works in paper created through hydraulic press experiments and pulp. His explorations of form have led to the creation of portfolios such as Forms in Tension and Polyphormic.
Cultural Activism and the Société Imaginaire
Beyond individual painting, Batuz is the founder of the Société Imaginaire, an undertaking designed to foster cultural dialogue and overcome boundaries. Through his foundations, including the Batuz Foundation USA and Batuz Foundation Uruguay, he has implemented projects like Helmets for Peace. His work often seeks to visually annul differences between people through direct communication.
His collaborative projects have spanned various global locations, including:
- Germany: Working at Schloss Schaumburg and Altzella.
- United States: Exhibiting in New York City and Washington DC.
- Argentina: Establishing the Artist Center in Villa Gesell.
- Antarctica: Realizing the project no mas fronteras en la Antartida.
