The Life and Artistic Evolution of Ben Muthofer
Born in Opole, Poland, Ben Muthofer was a German visual artist who worked as both a painter and a sculptor. His academic journey began with an apprenticeship from 1952 to 1955 in Erfurt, followed by studies at the Werkkunstschule Bielefeld and the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he was a master student of Professor Ernst Geitlinger. His career took him to the United States in 1968, where he worked with Alexander Calder and Ernest Trova, and later to Iceland, where he held a professorship at the Kunsthochschule in Reykjavík in 1988. He eventually returned to Germany, living and working in Munich, Kirn, and Ingolstadt.
Sculptural Form and Light
Muthofer’s sculptural work is characterized by its relationship to the geometric form of the triangle. His sculptures often utilize thin, white steel sheets that are folded, nested, or placed against one another, creating a language of planes that suggests volume and mass. These works frequently employ symmetry—both axial and rotational—and the diagonal to guide the viewer's gaze. In his later years, Muthofer focused on "Lichtkörper" (light bodies) and "Lichtstelen" (light steles), utilizing white LED light to emphasize line and structure. He also developed "Kaleidoskopen Televisionen," which are rectangular reliefs made of plastic designed to be placed over a television monitor to create kaleidoscopic light reflections.
