A Life in Applied Arts

Ena Rottenberg was a Hungarian-Austrian craftswoman, draftswoman, ceramist, and a member of the Wiener Werkstätte. After studying at the Vienna School of Applied Arts, she worked as a freelance painter and created designs for ceramics, jewelry, ivory paintings, and decorations for cut glass. Her creative output extended to stained-glass windows for a Viennese convent of Franciscan nuns, as well as designs for various tapestries for the Gobelin Manufactory.

Her work with the J. & L. Lobmeyr Glass Manufactory involved developing bright, transparent enamel colors and creating engraved and relief-carved large glass vessels. In 1925, she presented the showpiece "Die Welle Woge" (The Billowing Wave) at the Exposition Internationale des arts décoratifs et industriels Modernes in Paris, where she received a gold medal for her designs.

Porcelain and Glass Design

Rottenberg was a highly influential designer at the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory Augarten, where she designed eight figures and approximately 125 decorations for various vessels. Her most successful porcelain design, the Art Deco tea and coffee service No. 20 Ena, was introduced in 1930. Other notable works include her exotic-looking Orient service, which featured lid knobs shaped like exotic heads.

In 1937, she was among the sculptors commissioned by Henry Schlevogt of the Curt Schlevogt glassworks to create pieces for the "Ingrid" line, which contributed to the Czechoslovak pavilion winning a Grand Prize at the Paris World's Fair. Her designs are held in various institutions, including:
