A Life in Art and Service

Born in Shoeburyness, England, Jack Shadbolt moved to Canada with his parents in April 1911 and was raised in Victoria, British Columbia. His formal artistic education took him across the globe, including studies at the Art Students' League in New York City, as well as in London and Paris. Before establishing himself as a prominent painter, he spent years teaching in high schools in Duncan and Vancouver, British Columbia. His career was significantly shaped by his service during World War II; after enlisting in 1942, he sketched and painted in a prisoner-of-war camp at Petawawa, Ontario, before serving as an administrative officer for the official Canadian War Art Program in London in 1945.

Artistic Legacy and Recognition

Following the war, Shadbolt returned to the Vancouver School of Art, eventually serving as the head of the painting and drawing section upon his retirement in 1966. His creative output was diverse, spanning from significant oil paintings to poetry, which he published alongside his drawings in 1973. His contributions to Canadian art were recognized through several honors, including being named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1972 and receiving the Order of British Columbia in 1990. In 1987, he and his wife, Doris Meisel, founded the Vancouver Institute for the Visual Arts, which later became The Jack and Doris Shadbolt Foundation for the Visual Arts. His work has been featured in major exhibitions and even commemorated on a Canada Post stamp.
