Villem Ormisson: the artist behind the paintings
The Life and Art of Villem Ormisson
Born in Pärsti Rural Municipality, Estonia, Villem Ormisson was a painter and art educator. His formal training began at the Heine High School in Viljandi and Hugo Treffner High School in Tartu, followed by studies at the Riga City Art School from 1910 to 1914. During his time in Riga, he studied drawing under Jānis Tilbergs and painting under Vilhelms Purvītis. In 1922, he expanded his studies with a two-month period in Berlin and Dresden.
Ormisson's artistic output primarily focused on landscapes and still lifes, with occasional portraits. His early works showed influences of Impressionism and the work of Konrad Mägi. Following his travels to Germany in 1922, his style incorporated Expressionist features, characterized by darker colors and a predominant greenish-blue tone. By the 1930s, his work returned to more Impressionistic landscapes, particularly his peaceful winter views of Tartu.
Teaching and Legacy
As an educator, Ormisson served as an art teacher in Viljandi for eight years before becoming a drawing and painting teacher at the Pallas Art School in Tartu in 1926. He later served as the school's assistant principal from 1929 to 1940. He was known for his considerate approach to instruction, avoiding direct criticism or the imposition of specific styles on his students.
Beyond the classroom, Ormisson was deeply involved in the Pallas art association, serving as chairman during several periods between 1927 and 1936. His life was marked by a passion for painting, chess, and fishing. He passed away in Tartu in 1941. His legacy is honored through various exhibitions and a street in the Ihaste district of Tartu named in his honor.
