Born in Vienna to the engraver Carl Heinrich Rahl, the painter Carl Rahl emerged as a significant figure in the nineteenth-century Austrian art scene. He was commissioned by the Greek philanthropist Simon Sinas to create significant works for the facade and vestibule of Vienna's Fleischmarkt Greek Church, including paintings depicting heroes of the Greek War of Independence. Beyond religious and commemorative commissions, Rahl’s artistic footprint can be found in the very fabric of Viennese architecture:
