A Life of Service and Exploration
John Alan Lyde Caunter was a senior British Army officer and a pioneer shark angler off the British coast. Born in Banwell, Somerset, he was educated at Uppingham School and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. His military career included serving as a prisoner of war during World War I, from which he escaped from a camp at Schwarmstedt to reach England via the Netherlands. He later served with the British Salonika Army and held several high-ranking positions, including commanding officer of the 1st Battalion, Royal Tank Corps in Egypt and commander of 4th Armoured Brigade in the Western Desert campaign. He retired in 1944.
Beyond his military duties, Caunter was a significant figure in maritime pursuits. He founded the Shark Angling Club of Great Britain and served as its first president. His expertise was documented in his 1961 book, Shark Angling in Great Britain, which was the first book published in Britain to address shark fishing off the British coast. He died in East Looe, Cornwall.
Artistic Work
In addition to his military and angling pursuits, Caunter is noted for his painting. His work includes the piece titled The Sun breaks through by Brig, which is held in the National Trust collection and dated to 1948.
