Early Life and Education

Jost Amman (1539-1591) was a Swiss-German artist born in Zurich, Switzerland. His father was a professor of Classics and Logic, ensuring Jost received a well-rounded education – an unusual advantage for artists of his time. Little is known about his early artistic training, but his later work demonstrates a strong foundation in drawing and design.

Career and Artistic Development

In 1560, Amman moved to Nuremberg, a major center for printmaking at the time. He became a citizen of the city and remained there until his death in March 1591. Initially, he worked alongside Virgil Solis, a leading producer of book illustrations. This collaboration undoubtedly influenced Amman’s early style and technique.

Amman was remarkably productive; one account suggests his drawings from just four years could fill a hay wagon! Approximately 1,500 prints are attributed to him, making him one of the last major producers of woodcuts for books before engravings largely took over that role. He often employed specialist cutters (Formschneider) but occasionally signed his work with both a cutter’s knife and quill pen, suggesting he sometimes cut blocks himself.

• Book Illustrations: Amman is best known for his detailed woodcut illustrations in books. He contributed significantly to the Bible published by Sigismund Feierabend in Frankfurt and a topographical survey of Bavaria by Philipp Apian.
• Trachtenbuch Von Nurnberg (Costume Book of Nuremberg): This work is particularly celebrated for its meticulous depictions of clothing from various regions, providing valuable insights into 16th-century fashion and social customs.
• Panoplia Omnium Liberalium Mechanicarum et Seden-tariarum Artium Genera Continens: Containing 115 plates, this comprehensive work illustrates a wide range of professions and trades.
• Engravings of French Kings: Amman created a series of engravings featuring the kings of France accompanied by short biographies, published in Frankfurt in 1576.
