Born in Bangalore, India, Alfred Reginald Thomson navigated a world defined by profound silence. Being deaf from birth, his perception of the environment was shaped not by sound, but by a heightened sensitivity to visual rhythm and form. After his family returned to Britain, he attended the Royal School for Deaf Children at Margate, where he mastered sign language and began to cultivate the observational skills that would later define his career. Though his early path was marked by personal challenges—including a period of forced labor on a farm in Kent after failing an entrance exam—his innate talent for imagery could not be suppressed.

His artistic journey found its footing through commercial endeavors, proving that his visual language was potent enough to transcend the lack of spoken word. He began his professional life designing posters for a whisky company and later created striking advertisements for Daimler Cars. The most significant chapter of Thomson's career unfolded during World War Two, when he served as an official War Artist to the Royal Air Force.
