Born in Mannheim, Germany, he was educated primarily by Johann Christian Ludwig Heydenreich, a respected artist who instilled in him a passion for observation and artistic precision. Kobell’s formative years coincided with the Enlightenment, yet he embraced a distinctly Baroque aesthetic initially, influenced by artists like Rembrandt and Rubens – a stylistic choice that would later evolve into his signature Romantic style. Kobell's journey to artistic excellence began with a scholarship granted by Karl Theodor, Electors of Bavaria, allowing him to pursue formal training in Rome between 1776 and 1785.
