John Thomas Young Gilroy: A Life in Art & Advertising Early Life and Education Born: 1898 in Whitley Bay, Northumberland, England. Gilroy’s early life was shaped by a formal education at Durham University. However, his studies were interrupted by the outbreak of World War I.
