Early Life, Family and Training

Jaap Min enters the world on 16 September 1914 in Bergen, Netherlands. He grows up in a landscape that will later define his sense of place, though his early years are shaped by the formal rigors of the academy. He is the uncle of the poet Neeltje Maria Min. By 1938, the focus shifts to Amsterdam, where he enrolls at the Rijksakademie to begin training in monumental art. Under the guidance of Johannes Hendricus Jurres and Heinrich Campendonk, his technical foundation takes shape.

The trajectory of his development changes in 1939. A study trip to Italy pulls him away from the Dutch coast and into the heart of classical tradition. He travels through Padua and Verona, encountering the weight and scale of the Italian masters. The monumental work of Giotto leaves a permanent mark on his vision, a lasting influence that persists through the rest of his life. This encounter with the Italian past provides the structural language for his future compositions.

Career and Academic Teaching

The year 1944 marks the beginning of a long period of professional activity that would span over four decades. After establishing his practice, the focus shifts to Maastricht in 1955. Here, he takes up a position as a teacher at the Jan van Eyck Academie. This academic tenure lasts until 1961, a period he later describes as one of his least happy. The distance from the coast weighs heavily. He feels lost in the landscape of Limburg, longing for the sea and the specific light of the North.

In 1961, the pull of home becomes too strong to ignore. He leaves the academy and returns to Bergen. This return marks a steady, uninterrupted phase of creation. He settles back into the rhythm of the North Holland landscape, working consistently on both commissioned pieces and independent projects. He remains in Bergen, producing work until his death in 1987.

Monumental Works and Commissions

The scale of Min’s output shifts from the intimate canvas to the structural demands of architecture. His monumental oeuvre encompasses a diverse range of media, including wall paintings, wall sculptures, concrete reliefs, stained glass windows, mosaics, and tapestries. These works are distributed across approximately 50 locations, totaling about 75 art objects. His presence in the public and sacred sphere is marked by a heavy, physical engagement with the spaces he inhabits.

In 1968, he produced works for the Pius X-kerk in Alkmaar. This site remains a point of interest; even after the building was repurposed, parts of the interior serve as a hospice for palliative care, where his stained glass window remains visible. His reach extends to the Jozephkerk and the former Verzorgingshuis Kooimeer, as well as the IKC De Wegwijzer. These commissions reflect a career spent integrating art into the functional fabric of community and religious life.

The final chapter of his monumental output arrived at the H. Felicitaskerk in Spijkenisse. This project, designed by his son, the architect Maarten Min, represents his last monumental work. It marks the conclusion of a long trajectory of creating art that is inseparable from the buildings it occupies.
