Born in Chicago, United States, Karl Benjamin began his journey into the world of art quite unexpectedly. This serendipitous interest led him to study at the Claremont Graduate School, where he earned an M.A. in 1960.

Benjamin became recognized as one of the "Four Abstract Classicists" in a 1959–60 exhibition that served as a West Coast alternative to Abstract Expressionism. His work is characterized by:

His style is described as both intuitive and systematic, focusing on how colors change when juxtaposed. Throughout his career, he balanced his studio practice with a long tenure as a teacher, including a role as a professor and artist-in-residence at Pomona College.
