A Life in Art and Nature
Born in Paris, France, Charles Edme Saint Marcel was a painter, printmaker, etcher, and graphic artist. His artistic journey began under the guidance of Charles de Steuben, a painter of history. Seeking to master the art of painting in the open air, he moved to Marlotte, near the forest of Fontainebleau, to study under Théodore Caruelle d'Aligny. It was in this setting, surrounded by the natural world, that he encountered the landscape traditions of the region.
Saint Marcel eventually became a collaborator of Eugène Delacroix. His work within Delacroix's studio involved both painting and engraving, including interpretations of Delacroix's own compositions. His talent for drawing and his ability to capture the essence of his subjects led to his involvement in various artistic endeavors, including travels to the Pyrenees.

In his later years, he turned his attention toward animalier subjects, producing portraits of both domestic and exotic animals, with a particular focus on horses and felines.
His technical skill was particularly noted in his use of etching, which allowed him to achieve a high level of precision in rendering animal fur. His subjects often displayed intense expressiveness and anatomical accuracy.
