About the artist: Hermann Geiseler
Early Life and Artistic Training
Hermann Geiseler enters the scene in Hamburg, born in 1903. The northern German city provides his origins, but the trajectory of his life shifts toward the south once he completes his schooling. He moves to Munich, a city defined by its deep-rooted academic traditions and artistic rigor.
The transition to Munich marks the beginning of his formal immersion into the professional art world. He enrolls at the Kunstakademie München, seeking to refine his technical command. Within the academy's walls, Geiseler comes under the guidance of Adolf Schinnerer. This mentorship shapes his early development, grounding his practice in the disciplined instruction of the Munich school.
Professional Achievements and Munich Activity
The late 1920s mark a period of rapid institutional recognition for Geiseler. By 1928, he is established as a member of the New Secession. This professional momentum continues into 1930, when he is awarded the Dürer Prize of the City of Nuremberg. His presence in the Munich art scene becomes undeniable during this era; in 1931, his works are selected for exhibition in the Glass Palace, just before the building's destruction by fire.
Post-war Munich finds Geiseler deeply embedded in the city's intellectual and creative circles. He becomes a founding member of the Seerosenkreis, a regular gathering of visual artists and writers held at the Seerose bar in Schwabing. His influence extends toward institutional support for his peers, as he campaigns for the establishment of the Seerosenpreis to provide opportunities for young artists.
Notable Artworks and Subjects
Geiseler’s brushwork often settles on the quietude of still life and the structural details of daily life. In 1933, he produced Fischer, a work rendered in oil on wood. His compositions frequently return to the arrangement of objects, such as the 1960 oil painting Fischstillleben mit Kerzenleuchter und Flasche. These studies of light and form extend to floral subjects, including a still life featuring irises in a spherical vessel. He worked across various media, utilizing oil on canvas or wood, and occasionally employing watercolor on paper.
The landscape and the human figure provide the other poles of his visual output. He captured the urban character of a city in 1950 with Ansicht der Düsseldorfer Altstadt. His focus on the human form appears in the 1955 work Sitzende junge Frau in weißem Kleid. Later in his career, his subjects shifted toward the coastal, as seen in the 1970 watercolor Boote in CASSIS. Whether documenting a specific streetscape or a solitary figure, his work maintains a consistent preoccupation with the tangible presence of his subjects.
